Balance transfer credit cards: UK and Canada checks

Balance transfer credit cards can reduce the interest charged on existing card debt, but the headline offer does not tell you the full cost. For UK and Canadian borrowers, a useful comparison starts with transfer fees, promotional deadlines, repayment capacity and the rate charged when the offer finishes.

  • A transfer moves debt; it does not cancel what you owe.
  • The transfer deadline and the promotional end date are different things.
  • Fees, purchase interest and lender restrictions can change the value of an offer.
  • UK and Canadian products have their own eligibility rules and conditions.

How do balance transfer credit cards work?

A balance transfer uses credit on the receiving card to repay an eligible balance elsewhere. The potential benefit is lower interest on that transferred debt, leaving more room in your budget to reduce what you owe.

That benefit depends on the agreement rather than the card’s marketing label. A purchase promotion, a cash advance and a balance transfer can have different prices, even when they appear on the same account.

Transferring debt also does not necessarily close the old card. Check both accounts afterwards: the receiving card needs to show the transfer correctly, and the original account may still have an amount outstanding.

For the wider habits that support repayment, Crednine’s guide to using credit cards carefully provides background beyond an introductory offer.

Start with the debt you want to move and the payment you can sustain after essential bills. Then compare the full transfer terms, rather than selecting the longest advertised promotion automatically.

CheckQuestion to ask
Transfer chargeIs there a fee for each transfer, including a minimum charge?
Qualifying windowWhen must the transfer be completed to receive the offer?
Promotional clockDoes it start at account opening or when the transfer happens?
Later interestWhich rate applies to any transferred debt still outstanding?
Other transactionsAre purchases charged differently from the transferred balance?
Payment conditionsWhat happens to the offer after a late minimum payment?

A fee-free offer can still become expensive if debt remains after its promotional period. Conversely, a transfer charge does not establish that an offer is poor value: it needs to be considered alongside interest costs and a realistic repayment timetable.

Keep a copy of the offer and the terms provided with your application. Comparing ways to manage a tight budget can also help identify whether the planned payments leave enough room for everyday costs.

What can UK borrowers learn from the NatWest example?

According to NatWest’s product information checked in October 2026, its Balance Transfer credit card advertises interest-free transferred balances for up to 11 months, with no transfer fee. Qualifying transfers must take place in the first 3 months, while the promotional clock starts when the account opens.

These timings answer different questions. The transfer window determines whether a transaction qualifies; it does not mean the full advertised promotional duration starts again whenever you move another balance.

Check the personal offer, not just the headline

NatWest explains that the actual credit limit, interest rate and promotional duration depend on its assessment. Its rules also exclude transfers from other NatWest Group credit cards and restrict how much of the credit limit can be used for a transfer.

Those are conditions of this UK product, not a universal rule for every British card. They show why checking the lender behind an existing card matters as much as checking the brand on its front.

NatWest’s support guidance lists the app and the telephone number on the card as ways to request a transfer. A request is a separate step from simply receiving a new card, so confirm that it has actually been processed.

What is different in the Canadian MBNA example?

According to MBNA Canada’s True Line product information checked in October 2026, the advertised introductory offer covers eligible transfers completed within 90 days of opening the account. Its detailed terms describe 12 statement periods of promotional interest from each eligible transaction’s date.

This differs from the account-opening clock in the NatWest example. It illustrates why an offer’s detailed wording matters more than assuming every introductory period starts at the same event.

Separate promotional interest from transfer charges

MBNA lists a transaction charge and a minimum fee for balance transfers initiated with the application. An interest-free promotion therefore does not mean the transaction itself is free; check the current application terms for the precise charges.

Its terms also exclude repayment of balances with MBNA or its affiliates, including TD Bank Group. Requested transfers cannot exceed the authorised limit, and MBNA says it may make only a partial payment if the requested total is too high.

MBNA lists Canadian residency and the age of majority in the applicant’s province or territory among its eligibility requirements. These Canadian conditions cannot be substituted for the UK product’s eligibility checks, or treated as a promise of approval.

When might moving the balance be the wrong approach?

A transfer is less useful when the planned payment already exceeds what your household can afford. It may rearrange the debt without addressing the gap between income and spending.

There is also a risk of borrowing again on the old card while repaying the new one. Treat the transfer as a repayment arrangement rather than extra spending capacity; Crednine’s guide to organising debt repayments offers related planning context.

Minimum payments remain important during a promotion. MBNA’s terms, for example, explain that a late minimum payment can trigger the end of the promotional rate under the timing specified in the agreement.

Before committing, record the qualifying deadline, the promotional end date and the payment due dates. If essential bills or existing repayments are already unaffordable, discussing support with your lender can be more relevant than making another application.
