Credit report errors: how to dispute UK and Canadian records

Credit report errors can be challenged by identifying the incorrect entry, collecting supporting records and contacting the agency or business responsible. In the UK and Canada, the practical aim is to correct the underlying information, not to buy a higher score. Keep the two countries’ procedures separate and check the outcome in writing.

  • Describe the exact entry that is wrong and the correction you are requesting.
  • Contact the agency displaying the error and, where relevant, the organisation supplying it.
  • A Canadian Equifax correction does not replace a separate TransUnion dispute.
  • A successful correction does not promise a particular score or lending decision.

What counts as a credit report error?

An error is information that does not accurately describe your circumstances or account history. That might mean a debt belonging to someone else, an incorrect address link or a payment record that conflicts with your statements. An unfamiliar entry deserves investigation rather than an immediate assumption that the whole file is fraudulent.

According to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office, in guidance consulted in October 2026, inaccurate or outdated personal data can contribute to an unfair refusal of credit. The useful question is therefore which record needs changing, rather than how many score points a correction might produce.

Separate an incorrect record from an unwelcome but accurate one. If a payment really was missed, asking for an investigation does not turn it into an on-time payment. Our guide to handling a missed credit card payment in the UK and Canada covers that different situation.

Does a wrong personal detail have a predictable score impact?

There is no reliable points estimate to attach to every typing mistake. A wrong address can raise a matching problem, while an account attributed to the wrong person involves a different issue. Explain the factual mistake without claiming a particular effect on your score or assuming that correcting it guarantees approval.

What evidence helps explain the mistake?

Understand your credit card statement

Start with the actual report entry, not just a score notification. Save the report date, the agency name, the organisation shown beside the account and the specific field you dispute. Keep this information with copies of the records that support your explanation.

Issue to investigateUseful supporting material
A payment recorded incorrectlyAccount statements and a dated payment confirmation
A personal detail that does not matchRelevant identification or address evidence requested through the official process
An account you do not recogniseThe disputed entry and a clear explanation that you did not open it
An account status that conflicts with your recordsThe lender’s correspondence confirming the status

For payment disputes, distinguish the date you instructed a payment from the date the lender recorded receipt. Comparing the report with your credit card statement and payment details can help make the question specific. It does not settle the dispute by itself.

Submit documents through the organisation’s verified process and follow its identity-check requirements. Keep copies of what you send, the submission date and any reference number. A concise explanation with relevant evidence is easier to follow than an unsupported request to remove everything negative.

How do you challenge an error in the UK?

The ICO’s guidance says to raise an inaccurate file with the credit reference agency that supplied it. Where the issue comes from a lender or another reporting organisation, contact that business too. The agency displays the record, but the original provider may need to investigate its own records before the entry can change.

Describe what the report currently says, why you believe it is wrong and what you want corrected. For a wrong-person account or an address where you never lived, make that distinction explicit. The ICO explains that agencies can investigate matching problems and inaccurate address connections.

Different agencies can hold different information because lenders are not required to report to every agency. Treat each affected file as something to check rather than assuming one complaint updates every version. Accessing your information does not require purchasing a monthly subscription, according to the ICO.

What if the disagreement is about a bill?

A dispute about whether a service charge is justified is not automatically proof that the credit entry is inaccurate. The ICO distinguishes financial or service disputes from data-accuracy complaints. Resolve the underlying complaint with the business or relevant dispute route, and retain any written decision supporting a correction.

How does the Canadian dispute process differ?

According to Equifax Canada’s guidance consulted in October 2026, you can dispute inaccurate information without a filing fee. You can approach the business supplying the information, the reporting agency displaying it, or both. Explain the specific error and provide the supporting material requested by the official process.

Equifax explains that an agency may correct information using the documents provided or refer the dispute to the reporting business for investigation. That business reviews the material and reports its findings, including any necessary changes. The agency then communicates the investigation result.

Equifax Canada also says a problem on a TransUnion Canada file needs to be taken directly to TransUnion Canada. If both files contain the mistake, track the submissions separately. Do not apply UK complaint routes to a Canadian file simply because the agencies share familiar brand names.

What if the record is not corrected?

Read the response against the original issue: did the organisation investigate the payment date, ownership or address you actually challenged? If its explanation misses your evidence, a follow-up can identify that gap and request a clearer response. Retain the full correspondence rather than restarting without the earlier reference.

In the UK, the ICO says unresolved, clear inaccuracies may be brought to it after contacting the agency and original lender. It does not adjudicate financial disputes. Its credit guidance also carries an under-review notice, so check current instructions before making a formal complaint.

After any correction, check the affected entry again. If you are preparing to borrow, accurate records are only part of the decision: our guide to comparing personal loan costs in the UK and Canada explains the separate affordability and product checks.
