NHS McCloud pension tax: how do you check a UK adjustment?

NHS McCloud pension tax changes can mean a refund, an additional charge or no change at all. To check your position, use your Remediable Pension Savings Statement and HMRC’s public service pension adjustment service. A revised pension statement is the starting point for checking past tax, not confirmation that you will receive money.

  • Revised pension growth can change an earlier annual allowance calculation.
  • The outcome depends on your records and how any original charge was paid.
  • A scheme adjustment is not necessarily a cash refund to your bank account.
  • Reporting deadlines and retirement benefit choices are separate issues.

Why can McCloud change an NHS pension tax bill?

The McCloud remedy changes how certain public service pension benefits are treated for past service. NHSBSA describes this as rollback: eligible service is reassigned to the older 1995/2008 Scheme instead of the 2015 Scheme. The affected service period starts on 1 April 2015 and ends on 31 March 2022.

That move can change the pension growth figure used to assess annual allowance tax. The relevant figure is called a pension input amount: it is not simply the contributions deducted from your pay. A recalculation can therefore matter even when you have not paid extra contributions or withdrawn pension money.

NHSBSA says the effect can be a refund, extra tax or little or no change. The existence of the remedy does not establish an individual entitlement. This guide focuses on NHS Pensions administered by NHSBSA for England and Wales; members of other schemes need their own administrator’s instructions.

These are UK pension tax arrangements, not Canadian pension rules. Ordinary contribution relief is also a separate subject: our guide to UK pension tax relief checks explains that distinction for savers reviewing their contributions.

Which statement do you need before checking?

The key document is a Remediable Pension Savings Statement, usually shortened to RPSS. It provides revised pension growth information for the affected years. Use the statement supplied for your circumstances, including any replacement version, rather than assuming an old annual statement remains suitable.

NHSBSA says members receiving an RPSS should check their position with HMRC. Receiving the statement does not itself mean tax is payable. Equally, an earlier tax payment does not prove a refund is due after the revised calculation.

What if your statement has not arrived?

NHSBSA acknowledges delays in producing statements. Its guidance directs members who paid remedy-period tax charges directly to HMRC, did not use Scheme Pays and have not received an RPSS to complete its McCloud self-identify request form. Check those conditions rather than treating the form as a general refund application.

Members whose relevant service always remained in the legacy scheme do not need an RPSS on that basis, according to NHSBSA. People who began receiving benefits before 1 October 2023 follow a different statement sequence. If your circumstances do not match the standard instructions, contact your scheme administrator rather than entering estimated figures.

How do you check and report the tax adjustment?

HMRC’s guidance, updated on 20 March 2026, directs affected members to its Calculate your public service pension adjustment service. The service assesses the tax consequences of the remedy and lets members report relevant changes. It does not calculate retirement benefits or choose which pension benefits you take.

Preparing the records first reduces the risk of mixing tax years or entering figures from an outdated statement. HMRC lists several types of information that may be needed:

  1. Your RPSS, including any revised statements.
  2. Income and personal allowance records, using P60s or your personal tax account where needed.
  3. Earlier Self Assessment returns and details of pension tax charges.
  4. Information about other relevant public service pension memberships.
  5. Retirement or benefit crystallisation statements, where applicable.

Follow the service’s questions and retain the calculation and submission records. Checking a calculation and submitting a report are distinct steps. HMRC explains that where there is no annual allowance tax change and no lifetime allowance change to report, the service will not allow a submission.

For remedy-related annual allowance reporting for 2022/23, HMRC directs members to the adjustment service rather than Self Assessment. That instruction is specific to the remedy process; it does not mean ordinary tax return obligations disappear.

Would an overpayment come back as cash?

The route depends on the tax year and who paid the original charge. NHSBSA distinguishes directly paid overpayments for 2015/16 to 2018/19, which involve scheme compensation, from those for 2019/20 to 2021/22, which involve an HMRC refund. The adjustment service helps establish the appropriate route.

Scheme Pays cases are different. If the pension scheme paid the original tax charge on your behalf, an overpayment can require an adjustment to that arrangement rather than a personal cash repayment. Keep the original election or related correspondence with your tax records.

This distinction matters when planning spending. An expected reduction in a pension-related charge is not automatically money available for household bills. A household bill audit for UK and Canadian readers can help organise existing commitments without relying on an unconfirmed refund.

What if the calculation shows extra tax or a deadline problem?

A revised statement can produce an additional liability as well as a repayment. Follow HMRC’s reporting and payment instructions, and ask your scheme about any applicable Scheme Pays option. Do not assume that checking the figures automatically arranges payment.

Check the reporting deadline separately from any scheme election deadline. HMRC explicitly warns that the service’s facility to save and return to progress does not extend statutory time limits. If a statement arrived late or you think a deadline has passed, raise that specific issue with HMRC and the administrator.

Professional assistance may be useful where records are missing, several schemes are involved or earlier returns are unclear. The practical objective is a documented calculation using the correct statement, not a predicted refund based on someone else’s outcome.
