Personal loan cancellation: can you withdraw in the UK?

Personal loan cancellation in the UK is usually possible within a statutory cooling-off period for a regulated agreement. Receiving the money does not automatically remove that right, but you still need to notify the lender and repay what you borrowed, together with applicable interest. This is different from simply stopping repayments.

  • Most regulated personal loans have a 14-day withdrawal window, subject to the agreement and applicable exclusions.
  • If funds have arrived, withdrawal still involves returning the money and paying interest for the time you held it.
  • The deadline for notifying the lender is separate from the deadline for repaying after notice.
  • Outside the withdrawal window, early settlement is a different process and may involve a charge.

Can you cancel a small personal loan after signing?

For most UK regulated personal loans, signing is not necessarily your last opportunity to change your mind. Section 66A of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 provides a withdrawal right for regulated consumer credit agreements that are not excluded. You do not need to justify why you no longer want the borrowing.

The practical issue is the agreement’s legal status, not whether its marketing calls the loan small, quick or flexible. Check the sections covering your withdrawal right, notice details and repayment obligations. Loans secured on a home have different rules; this guide concerns ordinary regulated unsecured personal borrowing.

According to Zable’s guidance updated on 31 July 2026, borrowers can withdraw from most personal loan agreements within 14 days. Its explanation also distinguishes cancellation before signing from withdrawal after an agreement has been made. These are UK rules, not a statement of Canadian cancellation rights.

What if you have only submitted an application?

If you have applied but not signed the agreement, Zable explains that you can contact the lender to withdraw the application. Make your request explicit and ask for confirmation of its status. Do not assume that closing a browser window tells the lender you want to stop.

When does the cooling-off period start?

Under section 66A, the notice period runs for 14 days starting the day after the relevant day. That relevant day is the latest applicable event specified in the law, including making the agreement and receiving the required agreement copy or confirmation. The date of application alone does not establish the deadline.

For a typical personal loan, Zable describes the start as the day after the agreement is made or the signed copy or confirmation is received, whichever is later. Keep the dated agreement and delivery messages. If the dates are unclear, ask the lender to identify the deadline and explain its basis.

The withdrawal period and repayment period serve different purposes. The first is your window to give notice; the second concerns returning funds after notice. Receiving the loan does not replace the need to check the agreement dates, and waiting for an instalment reminder may leave you outside the withdrawal window.

How do you tell the lender and return the money?

Section 66A permits oral or written notice, with rules about the channel or address used. Your agreement supplies the relevant contact details. A general customer-service conversation about whether cancellation is possible is less clear than a definite statement that you are exercising your withdrawal right.

  1. Find the agreement reference and the contact method specified for withdrawal.
  2. Give clear notice within the applicable period and retain evidence of when it was sent or given.
  3. Ask for the repayment amount, including interest, and verified payment instructions.
  4. Return the required money within the repayment deadline and keep the payment record.
  5. Request confirmation that the lender has processed the withdrawal and that no balance remains.

Zable explains that money already received must be repaid, with interest for the days it was held, within 30 days of giving notice. Treat that as a repayment obligation, not additional time to decide whether to withdraw. Ask the lender to confirm how the interest changes if payment arrives on a different date.

Oakbrook Loans also explains that withdrawal is not free use of the funds. Having already spent the money does not make the repayment requirement disappear. If returning it would leave you short for essentials, contact the lender and seek free debt guidance before assuming cancellation solves the problem.

What if the funds have not arrived yet?

Tell the lender promptly that you want to withdraw rather than assuming no transfer means no agreement. Ask whether a payment is pending and how it will be handled. Our guide to same-day personal loan funding checks explains why approval and receipt of money are separate stages.

What happens if the withdrawal deadline has passed?

After the withdrawal window, the question normally becomes early settlement rather than statutory withdrawal. Zable says borrowers can request a settlement figure, and some lenders apply an early repayment charge. The remaining balance displayed in an app is not necessarily the complete amount required to close the loan.

Ask for the figure, its validity date and any charges before sending a final payment. Keep ordinary payments on track while clarifying the process with the lender. Cancelling a payment instruction alone is not the same as cancelling the debt.

If you are considering replacement borrowing, compare the overall obligations rather than just the new monthly payment. Our personal loan cost-comparison guide for UK and Canadian readers sets out the checks involved. A lower instalment can reflect a different repayment term rather than a simpler exit.

Where the original concern is affordability, a personal loan budget check can help organise the decision. Withdrawal rights offer an exit route within their scope, but they do not provide replacement funds or remove interest already owed. Avoid treating another application as an automatic solution.
