Personal loan early repayment: how do you settle a UK loan? – CredNine

Personal loan early repayment: how do you settle a UK loan?

Personal loan early repayment is generally possible in the UK, but clearing the debt means checking a lender’s settlement figure, not simply transferring the balance shown in an app. Before applying, ask how full repayment and partial overpayments work, whether costs apply, and what happens to your remaining instalments.

  • A settlement figure sets out the amount needed to close the loan.
  • Requesting a quote does not commit you to paying it.
  • A partial overpayment may change future instalments or the repayment period.
  • Lender policies differ, so a charge-free example is not a universal rule.

Can you repay a UK personal loan before the agreed end date?

For a personal loan covered by the Consumer Credit Act, early settlement is an established option. Citizens Advice’s guidance for England, consulted in October 2026, explains that repaying a covered credit agreement early reduces the total amount payable. It also says personal loans are usually within the Act’s scope.

The first check is the agreement itself. Look for the statement confirming whether the Act covers it, then find the sections on early settlement and additional payments. If the wording is unclear, ask the lender to explain it before treating a general guide as confirmation for your contract.

This article concerns UK personal loans, not Canadian borrowing rules, mortgages or every type of secured finance. The Citizens Advice page used here is specifically labelled for England; borrowers elsewhere in the UK can consult the relevant national guidance if their circumstances require advice.

What can you ask before applying?

Ask how to obtain a settlement quote, whether early repayment involves an adjustment or charge, and how extra payments are allocated. Keep the answers with the proposed agreement so that flexibility is part of the comparison, rather than an assumption based on an advertised monthly payment.

For the wider borrowing decision, our guide to comparing personal loan costs in the UK and Canada explains why the instalment alone does not describe the commitment.

Why can the settlement figure differ from your loan balance?

A displayed balance and a quote to close an account serve different purposes. The quote sets out what the lender needs for settlement, including the applicable interest calculation. A payment moving through the account can also mean the figure and the balance reflect different stages of processing.

Nationwide’s loan guidance, consulted in October 2026, offers a concrete example. It says its settlement figure includes interest and remains valid for 28 days. It also explains that a Direct Debit taken after the quote is issued can reduce the balance before the borrower settles.

That timing issue does not automatically mean either figure is wrong. Check the date of the quote, its expiry, and any instalment collected afterwards. Where a payment has intervened, follow the lender’s reconciliation instructions rather than assuming the original quote still represents the amount outstanding.

Does asking for a quote oblige you to pay?

No. Citizens Advice explains that requesting an early settlement figure does not force you to proceed. It is a way to establish the terms of the decision before releasing money.

Keep the quote in a form you can refer back to. If the payment date changes or the quote expires, ask whether an updated figure is needed. Avoid relying on a screenshot of the account balance as a substitute for the settlement instructions.

Are full settlement and partial overpayments treated the same?

Not necessarily. Full settlement aims to close the loan, while a partial overpayment leaves an agreement running. The practical question is what happens next: a smaller regular payment, an earlier finishing date, or another arrangement described by the lender.

Citizens Advice advises borrowers making a partial repayment to notify the lender in writing and ask how it affects both the debt and future payments. It notes that continuing with the same monthly amount over a shorter period may be possible instead.

Nationwide says it does not charge for overpayments or settling its personal loans early. That is useful evidence of its own policy, not proof that every UK lender offers identical terms. Compare the wording for your agreement without importing a different bank’s promises.

  • Ask whether the proposed payment is being treated as partial repayment or full settlement.
  • Request confirmation of the revised instalment or end date.
  • Check whether the regular Direct Debit continues unchanged.
  • Keep the payment reference and the lender’s written response together.

What can you check before sending the settlement payment?

Explore savings and debt repayment trade-offs

Start with the payment instructions supplied by the lender through a channel you already use. Check the destination, account reference and permitted payment method. Nationwide, for example, says a credit card cannot be used to pay off its personal loan; other lenders’ instructions need their own check.

Next, check your household cash position. Paying less future interest can be useful, but committing available cash can leave less room for essential bills or an unexpected expense. Citizens Advice flags the need to consider priority debts before paying off a credit agreement.

Our discussion of emergency savings versus repaying debt provides context for that liquidity trade-off. It is a separate question from whether the loan technically permits early repayment.

Do not treat stopping a Direct Debit as proof that a debt is cleared. Ask the lender how any pending collection will be handled and request confirmation once the settlement has been processed. Keep paying under the existing instructions unless the lender confirms a change.

If you have only just signed and want to undo the agreement, that may involve a different process. Our explanation of UK personal loan cancellation and withdrawal covers that distinction; early settlement of an ongoing loan is not the same request.
